PRODESA (Foundation for Promotion and Development)

Mission: We promote unconventional financial and non-financial services to families without access to large financial institutions, integrating components and processes of awareness and organization, and providing credit as one element in the whole process of development.

Specialty: Lending in the Remote Atlantic Coast Region

Organizational Profile: PRODESA provides microfinance services to the remote Atlantic region of Nicaragua, an area that is often neglected by both banks and microfinance institutions. Headquartered in Juigalpa, PRODESA primarily operates in the Southern part of the old agricultural frontier as well as along the coast, since these areas are easily accessible to borrowers in a region that lacks basic infrastructure.

Reaching out to the communities of the Atlantic Coast region, PRODESA offers microcredit loans for a wide array of purposes including housing, agriculture and livestock, and microenterprises, thus giving the men and women a chance to improve their quality of life and gain financial independence.

NICA Fund Partner Since: 2006

Borrowers: PRODESA lends to 17,281 borrowers. Of these individuals, 54% are women and 46% are men (as of September 2007).

Lending Protfolio: PRODESA’s total lending portfolio is $15,596,519 with an average loan size of $903. Of this portfolio, 53% goes toward agriculture and livestock, 18% to housing, 18% to commerce, small enterprise, and industry, and 11% to consumption (as of September 2007).
