CEPRODEL (Center for Promotion of Local Development and Poverty Eradication)

Mission: To promote sustainable local development, facilitating the vulnerable population with economic, organizational, and technological options to overcome poverty, based on the creative potential of the population.

Specialty: Lending for Livestock

Organization Profile: CEPRODEL was founded in 1990 and has now branched out to include 15 offices across the northern and northwestern regions of Nicaragua, down along the Pacific Coast and into Managua and the surrounding area. CEPRODEL reaches out to these communities by providing much needed loans for commerce, livestock, agriculture and housing.

Not only does CEPRODEL supply important microfinance assistance, but it also provides non-financial aid as well. CEPRODEL is one of the few microfinance organizations that gives technical support to its borrowers, providing training and cooperative development assistance. CEPRODEL also assists its members by offering remittance services. These services let Nicaraguan immigrants living outside of the country send money back home, allowing families to better educate their children and supply capital back into the economy. CEPRODEL’s holistic approach to microfinance extends to housing as well.

CEPRODEL provides technical and organizational support to poor communities struggling to build their own homes. This innovative approach allows members of the community to work side by side with organizations such as CEPRODEL, creating self-dignity and respect among those in poverty stricken communities.

NICA Fund Partner Since: 2007

Borrowers: CEPRODEL loans funds out to 13,818 total clients. Of these individuals, 41% of them are men and 59% are women (as of June 2007).
